In terms of the health Professions Act, any medical practitioner may do a Serious Injury Assessment. However not all have studies the exact requirements of completing such assessments.
Although any competent medical practitioner may complete such an assessment, it would be the attorney and/clients choice as to whether to leave their claim to be based on just any doctors opinion.
No doubt opinions vary between doctor to doctor, and further still knowledge of the required exact detail in which to complete such assessments vary.
The current leading authority is the AMA guidelines, 6th edition. Due to the detailed nature of the guidelines specialised training is required, and in Southern Africa, very few doctors indeed have such skills. Dr Terrence Kommal is certified in the AMA Guidelines (6th edition) by the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners and the American College of Disability Medicine.
